Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
