Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
