Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
