Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
