Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
