Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
