Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
