Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
