Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
