Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
