Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
