Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
