Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
